Foreign Office Issues Warning for UK Tourists Following Drone Strikes at Azerbaijani Airport

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has revised its travel guidance for Azerbaijan due to recent drone strikes at Nakhchivan International Airport. These developments come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East between Iran and the United States.

On March 5, 2026, Azerbaijan confirmed two drone strike impacts targeting the airport in its southwestern exclave of Nakhchivan. The FCDO cautions British nationals to adhere strictly to local authorities' instructions in the affected area as regional risks escalate.

This update coincides with ongoing conflicts in the Gulf region, following a US military strike on Iran that has generated instability affecting travelers worldwide. The situation remains volatile, prompting the FCDO to remind citizens to stay vigilant.

Compounding these tensions, Ukraine has announced its support for the US and allies in countering Iran’s Shahed drones. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed that Ukraine is assisting partners to bolster security efforts amid continuous drone attacks, which have included large-scale barrages launched by Russia using Shahed drones over the past four years.

Meanwhile, Israel conducted extensive strikes on Tehran’s regime infrastructure, signaling a further intensification of military actions in the region. US President Donald Trump emphasized the need for decisive action against Iran’s leadership, expressing a desire for regime change and stable governance.

The evolving geopolitical landscape underscores the importance for UK travelers to monitor official updates closely and exercise caution when visiting Azerbaijan and nearby regions.
