Foreign Office Issues Travel Warning for UK Tourists Visiting Nepal from March 5

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for UK nationals planning to visit Nepal, warning of possible disruptions starting March 5. The alert comes ahead of Nepal’s general election on that date and amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

The FCDO highlights risks of protests, political violence, and travel interruptions linked to the election. “Protests can begin without warning and may result in clashes,” the advisory states. It also notes that travel restrictions are expected throughout much of Nepal during this period. On election day itself, only essential travel will likely be permitted, with most businesses closing.

While international and domestic flights are expected to operate, some delays or cancellations may occur. Additionally, Nepal’s land border crossings will close prior to and on March 5.

The advisory warns that political unrest and protests could continue after the election, with authorities potentially increasing police presence and imposing curfews in some areas.

UK nationals are advised to avoid polling stations unless they are voting or officially accredited observers. They should also steer clear of political rallies, demonstrations, government buildings, and specifically the Maitighar Mandala area in Kathmandu.

The FCDO urges travellers to stay informed by following local media updates and adhering strictly to instructions from local authorities, including security forces deployed during the election. It is also recommended to keep in touch with hotels, airlines, and tour operators for the latest information on any travel disruptions during this period.
