Foreign Office Issues Travel Warning Amid Deadly Ebola Outbreak Near Rwanda-DRC Border

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued an urgent travel warning in response to a recent Ebola outbreak declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on 15 May. The warning particularly highlights risks near the border between Rwanda and the DRC, where tensions and potential fighting may pose additional dangers.

Due to the frequently poorly marked international borders in this remote region, travelers are at risk of unintentionally crossing into the DRC. The FCDO advises vigilance as military personnel are reportedly present on both sides of the border, and border crossings could close without notice.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified this Ebola outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, with the disease’s case fatality rate averaging around 50%. Heightened health screenings are expected at international borders, and travelers are encouraged to check entry and transit requirements carefully before their journeys.

In light of the outbreak, the DRC national football team has canceled a planned three-day World Cup preparation camp and a farewell event in Kinshasa. Team spokesperson Jerry Kalemo confirmed only the Kinshasa stage was affected, with subsequent preparation matches in Belgium, Spain, and Houston continuing as scheduled. FIFA is closely monitoring the situation and remains in communication with the DRC Football Association to ensure all medical and security protocols are followed.

Travelers are urged to stay informed through local media and the FCDO’s updated health and travel advice pages to navigate this evolving situation safely.
