Foreign Office Issues ‘No-Go Zones’ Warning for UK Travellers in Turkey and Cyprus

As the summer holiday season approaches, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advisories, cautioning British nationals against visiting certain regions in Turkey, Cyprus, and Greece. These areas have been identified as “no-go zones” due to ongoing conflicts and security concerns stemming from recent geopolitical unrest in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Heightened tensions in the region, following recent combined strikes on Iran by the US and Israel, have led to retaliatory Iranian attacks across neighboring countries, destabilizing the broader Middle East and raising safety risks for travellers.

In Turkey, the FCDO strongly advises against all travel within 10km of the Turkey-Syria border, citing ongoing fighting in Syria and an increased threat of terrorism. Residents and visitors should note that roads in Hatay Province near the border may be closed at short notice due to conflict-related developments.

Travellers to southeastern Turkey’s Hakkari province must obtain prior permission from the local Governor’s Office before visiting areas near the borders with Iraq and Iran. Those travelling with tour operators are urged to confirm permit requirements in advance.

Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey is designated a military zone, requiring visitors to secure authorisation from the Doubayazt government office and pay applicable fees. The FCDO recommends verifying permit necessities with travel agents or tour groups prior to visiting.

In Cyprus, the risk of terrorist attacks remains present. Early in the recent regional conflicts, RAF Akrotiri was targeted by a suspected drone strike. British nationals residing in the Sovereign Base Areas should adhere strictly to instructions from the Sovereign Base Areas Administration and official British Bases Cyprus social media channels. Those in the Republic of Cyprus should follow guidance from Cypriot authorities.

The FCDO emphasizes that escalating tensions in the region continue to pose significant security risks and may result in travel disruptions. In Greece, recent updates have removed previous warnings about mass demonstrations and widespread public service disruptions as of late February, reflecting a changing security landscape.

UK travellers are urged to stay informed with the latest official advice and exercise caution when planning visits to these regions.
