The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel guidance for UK tourists planning to visit Laos, introducing important new rules ahead of the upcoming summer holiday season.
Effective immediately, all foreign nationals entering Laos must complete the Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF) both within three days before arrival and three days before departure. This digital form replaces the old paper arrival and departure cards at key entry points, including Wattay International Airport in Vientiane, Luang Prabang International Airport, Pakse International Airport, and the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge I.
Despite this digitization, the LDIF does not alter existing visa policies. From January 1, 2025, tourist visas for Laos will revert to a 30-day validity starting from the date of arrival. UK travellers can apply for a single-entry Laos e-visa online at least five days before their trip, which is accepted at major border points.

Alternatively, a single-entry visa on arrival remains available at many entry locations within Laos. Tourists are permitted to extend their visa up to two times while in the country, offering an additional 60 days beyond the initial 30-day period.
Non-compliance with visa regulations can result in severe penalties, including a fine equivalent to 2,000 US dollars in Lao kip, deportation, and a ban from re-entering Laos if the stay exceeds 90 days without an approved extension.
Travellers should ensure their passports are valid for at least six months beyond their arrival date and contain at least two blank pages. Airlines will refuse boarding to passengers who do not meet these passport requirements.
It is crucial for tourists to double-check their travel documents and renew passports if necessary well before their departure dates. Entry will be refused to those using expired, lost, stolen, or otherwise invalid passports.
