Foreign Office Issues ‘Do Not Travel’ Warning for 21 Countries Amid Rising Middle East Tensions

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has imposed a comprehensive “do not travel” advisory on 21 countries due to escalating security concerns, particularly across the Middle East. British nationals currently in Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Palestine, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates are strongly encouraged to register their presence with the FCDO to receive timely updates and vital safety information.

Travelers in the Middle East are advised to closely monitor the FCDO’s latest travel guidance and to follow recommended crisis protocols. The recent attack on the US embassy in Riyadh by drones, which caused limited damage but no reported injuries, highlights the deteriorating security environment in the region. This incident followed reports of loud blasts and visible smoke over Riyadh’s diplomatic area, underscoring the heightened risks.

The FCDO has explicitly warned against all travel to Afghanistan, citing volatile security conditions and an increased risk of detention for British nationals. Travel near the contentious borders of Azerbaijan and Armenia is also prohibited, with strict no-travel zones within several kilometers of these borders due to ongoing tensions.

In Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the UAE, British nationals are urged to shelter in place following reported missile attacks. The FCDO recommends that individuals remain indoors in secure locations and adhere strictly to local authorities' instructions.

Travel restrictions extend to northern regions in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula and the Ismailiyah Governorate east of the Suez Canal, with most areas marked as unsafe or off-limits except for essential travel in certain coastal zones.

In Iran, all travel is discouraged due to the high risk of detention, especially for British and dual British-Iranian nationals. Similarly, Iraq—both Federal Iraq and the Kurdistan Region—faces travel bans amid escalating regional conflict.

Within Israel and Palestine, despite a decrease in the frequency of missile attacks, significant risks remain from rocket and drone strikes, potential shrapnel injuries, and airport disruptions. The FCDO has relocated some staff from Tel Aviv as a precaution but maintains embassy operations.

Jordan faces restricted travel advisories, particularly near the Syrian border where security concerns continue to mount. Lebanon remains unpredictable despite a ceasefire, as ongoing Israeli military operations present serious dangers. British nationals in Oman’s Duqm area and nearby locations are advised to shelter in place, while those around Salalah should consider leaving if possible.

Due to regional instability, parts of Pakistan near the Afghanistan border are under heightened security risks, with the FCDO urging caution around public gatherings and protests. Similar shelter-in-place orders apply to British nationals in Saudi Arabia and the UAE following missile and drone threats.

Yemen remains completely off-limits due to ongoing conflict and its volatile security situation. The FCDO also advises against travel to Syria, warning of unpredictable violence and the complete absence of consular support from within the country.

The FCDO urges all travelers in these affected areas to remain vigilant, stay informed through official channels, and ensure they have comprehensive travel insurance that covers emergencies and unexpected disruptions.
