Foreign Office Advises UK Tourists in Dubai to Stockpile Essential Supplies Amid Travel Disruptions

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued urgent advice for British tourists currently in Dubai to stockpile two essential types of items: emergency supplies and essential medications. This update comes as the FCDO amends its travel guidance for the United Arab Emirates (UAE), including popular destinations Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which attract many UK holidaymakers.

The FCDO urges travellers to stay informed by checking for the latest updates from airlines, tour operators, and local authorities before travelling. “If you are flying, do not proceed to the airport unless your airline has confirmed your booking,” the FCDO warns. This comes amid severe disruption to air travel across the Middle East, with thousands of flights cancelled since Saturday due to escalating regional tensions between the US and Iran.

In its advisory, the FCDO emphasizes that travel within and out of the UAE currently carries increased risk. It advises tourists to keep their departure plans under constant review and ensure all travel documents, including visas, are valid and up to date.

One British family recently caught in these disruptions shared their harrowing experience. Ourania Righelato, 32, from Barnet, north London, recounted how she, her partner, and their three-year-old daughter ended up camping out in an abandoned nightclub in Dubai after their flight was delayed. “The first night we slept on the floor because the hotel was not prepared for the influx of stranded travellers. The next day, the hotel staff were very accommodating, but not knowing when we could return home was incredibly stressful,” she said. Eventually, the family managed to return to the UK aboard Emirates flight EK8001, landing safely at Heathrow Airport.

The FCDO’s updated guidance serves as a critical reminder for British tourists in the UAE to prepare for ongoing disruptions, remain cautious, and prioritise their safety during uncertain times.
