Flats Plan Revealed for Garden of Historic Brownhills Chapel

A new proposal could transform a former chapel and schoolhouse garden in Brownhills into five modern flats. Azid Gungah has submitted a planning application to Walsall Council to develop the green space adjacent to United House on Coppice Lane.

The plan features a three-storey building that includes parking accommodations, a bin store, and bike storage. The design offers two single-bedroom flats on both the ground and first floors, with a single flat on the third floor. Residents will enjoy access to a communal garden area.

United House itself is a Locally Listed building, recognized for its architectural and historic value dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Currently, the proposed development site is an open plot with low vegetation and a mix of tree ages, free from any existing structures.

Mr. Gungah emphasized that the new building has been thoughtfully designed to remain ‘subservient’ to United House, ensuring that it does not obscure the historic structure. Vehicle access will be provided via an existing service road off Chester Road North, leading to five parking bays—four of which will be equipped with electric vehicle charging points.

“The proposed development balances the need for new housing with the imperative to protect and enhance the historic environment,” Mr. Gungah stated. “This scheme respects the setting of United House, addresses environmental considerations, and overcomes technical site challenges. It promises to be a sustainable, high-quality, and policy-compliant project that will positively contribute to the character of Brownhills.”
