Flags are not weapons - stop using them like it’s a turf war

Flags have long served as powerful symbols of identity, pride, history, and community. They are meant to represent unity and inclusiveness—not exclusion or division. Yet, in parts of the Midlands today, flags are increasingly being wielded as instruments of separation and hostility.

Rather than inviting connection, flags are too often employed to shut others out or, worse, mark territory in a way that feels aggressive and exclusionary.

A recent example comes from Leicester, where The Secret Garden, an LGBTQ+ hair salon owned by George Waterfield and Darren Cunningham, has faced flag theft repeatedly. Since flying a Pride flag outside their gender-neutral business in 2023, the banner has been stolen five times. The latest theft was caught on CCTV, showing two men climbing a lamppost at 5 a.m. to remove the flag.

If anything, the only person to pity here is the individual who woke early to commit this petty act. But their actions carry a more sinister message than mere prankishness. This was not just fabric being ripped down—it was an attempt to say, “You do not belong here. Your identity is unwelcome.”

The rainbow Pride flag remains as important today as ever. Such incidents underscore the persistent discrimination, hostility, and even violence faced by marginalized communities—especially transgender people—across society.

At the same time, campaigns like “Raise the Colours,” which have draped hundreds of Union Jacks and St George’s Crosses across lampposts and estates, feed into a broader climate of tension. In Birmingham, a petition signed by over a thousand residents calls on councils to take action against this “mass flagging,” which many perceive as a tool of intimidation.

We must stop treating flags as weapons in a turf war and recognize their true purpose: symbols forged by brave individuals who have fought and spoken out for freedom, equality, and community. Flags should bring us together, not tear us apart.
