Five teenagers killed in devastating head-on collision on Kildare motorway

Five male teenagers tragically lost their lives in the early hours of Sunday morning following a horrific head-on collision on the northbound carriageway of the M9 motorway in County Kildare. The crash occurred between Junctions 3 and 4, around 3:00 am.

One of the vehicles involved, believed to be a BMW, was reported to have been travelling the wrong way along the motorway before colliding head-on with another car carrying four passengers. Those occupants, understood to be family members including a seven-year-old child, were en route to Dublin Airport.

Following the collision, two women in their 30s from the second car are said to be in a critical condition. A woman in her 20s and the child are also receiving treatment in hospital with serious injuries. Emergency services responded swiftly to the incident.

Gardaí in Athy are conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this fatal road traffic collision. A spokesperson confirmed the recovery of the deceased teenagers from one vehicle, with post-mortem examinations planned at Naas General Hospital.

Authorities have appealed to motorists who were travelling on the M9 between 2:00 am and 3:00 am on Sunday, 16 August 2026, to come forward if they possess dashcam footage of the incident or nearby areas to assist the inquiry.

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly expressed his condolences and condemned the reckless behaviour leading to the tragedy: “These family members were travelling innocently when they were struck by a vehicle being driven the wrong way down the motorway. This horrific incident highlights the dangers of driving against the flow, especially when done for social media attention, disregarding the catastrophic consequences it may cause.”

Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, has been notified and is conducting an independent investigation in line with statutory obligations, which includes examining any potential involvement of Garda personnel in incidents where members of the public suffer serious injury or death.

Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact Athy Garda Station on 01 666 6000, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda station directly.

This grievous incident serves as a stark reminder of the severity of road safety breaches and the tragic outcomes they can produce.
