Five Key Birmingham City Centre Roads Set for Major Change Under Sprint Initiative

Birmingham city centre is poised for significant transformation as the Sprint initiative proposes new traffic regulations including 20mph speed limits and dedicated bus-only roads. These changes aim to improve public transportation and ease traffic congestion across the city.

The Sprint project will connect Walsall, Birmingham, and Solihull through a continuous bus route running along major corridors A34 and A45. To facilitate this, Birmingham City Council launched a public consultation on February 27 regarding traffic regulation orders—the legal framework needed to implement these changes.

Proposals include the introduction and variation of bus lanes and bus-only roads on several key stretches of city centre roads. Alongside this, the council plans to enforce 20mph speed limits on selected sections to enhance safety and promote smoother bus movement.

This initiative responds to the region’s rapid growth. Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) highlights that the West Midlands population is expected to rise by up to 444,000 by 2035. Additionally, 215,000 new homes are projected to be built by 2030, and business investment is anticipated to create 50,000 new jobs. The upcoming High Speed 2 (HS2) rail link will further boost regional connectivity.

Sprint aims to support inclusive and sustainable growth, ensuring that all residents benefit from enhanced transport opportunities. By investing in passenger transport infrastructure, the project seeks to improve capacity, service quality, and reliability.

Key features include dedicated bus lanes, priority traffic signals at junctions, and efficient passenger boarding processes. These will help buses maintain consistent speeds, resulting in faster and more predictable journey times without increasing bus speeds.
