Drivers regularly using key routes around Birmingham are being reminded to keep within the speed limits as police continue to monitor traffic using mobile speed camera vans.
These marked police vehicles are often found parked discreetly at the roadside, equipped with speed cameras that record passing vehicles. Their mobility allows them to move frequently, making it difficult for motorists to anticipate their locations.
Often, drivers notice these vans too late to adjust their speed, increasing the risk of receiving speeding tickets. Known as mobile units, these vans display speed camera symbols and are considered more effective than fixed cameras because they can patrol different areas at varying times.

The vans tend to revisit certain roads on a weekly or monthly basis to monitor ongoing traffic conditions. Birmingham residents who use these routes regularly, whether for commuting or school runs, should be especially mindful.
Data obtained by BirminghamLive highlights the locations where the highest numbers of speeding offences have been recorded so far in 2026. Fort Parkway, between Spitfire Island and Fort Retail Park, recorded the most offences, with 774 speeding violations caught by these mobile units in just the first half of the year.
While the presence of these vans may catch some drivers off guard, maintaining adherence to speed limits ensures safety and avoids penalties. Being aware and prepared on these frequented roads will help motorists stay compliant and avoid unwanted fines.
