First Images Reveal Striking 21-Storey Student Living Tower to Transform Birmingham Skyline

Birmingham is set to welcome a bold new architectural landmark with the approval of a 21-storey student accommodation tower at 120 Suffolk Street. The development, recommended for approval last week by Birmingham City Council’s planning committee, promises to be a prominent addition to the city’s skyline.

Designed by Glancy Nicholls Architects in partnership with US developer Landmark Properties, this 506-bed purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) scheme aims to blend scale, context, and livability. Adam McPartland, managing director at Glancy Nicholls, described the project as “an opportunity to bring forward a carefully considered high-density development on a prominent city centre site.”

The development will transform a brownfield site near the Mailbox into a residential complex featuring a 21-storey tower alongside an adjoining eight-storey building. It will house 441 studio apartments and 65 cluster apartments, complemented by thoughtfully designed indoor and outdoor communal spaces tailored for modern student life.

Central to the design is a landscaped courtyard serving as the main communal area, providing a secure and sociable environment for residents. Additionally, a rooftop terrace will offer expansive views across Birmingham, enhancing the living experience. The scheme also prioritizes sustainable transport with dedicated cycle storage and efficient servicing facilities at lower levels.

With detailed design work and a BSR Gateway 2 application next on the agenda, the development’s completion is anticipated by 2029, marking a significant milestone in Birmingham’s urban evolution.
