Wetherspoons is set to make history with the opening of the UK’s first university-owned franchise pub, scheduled to open its doors in May. Located at the University of Surrey’s Stag Hill campus, the new venue, named The Sir Ronald Wates, will mark a pioneering partnership between the pub giant and an educational institution.
The Sir Ronald Wates will be housed within the newly refurbished Wates House building, which closed in December for a comprehensive upgrade. This collaboration is unique as Surrey becomes the very first university to own and operate a Wetherspoons franchise, a significant departure from the chain’s usual operational model.
Will Davies, Chief Operating Officer at the University of Surrey, explained the vision behind the initiative: “We wanted to provide our community with a pub-style venue that delivers genuine value alongside quality. Thanks to Wetherspoons’ pricing power and efficient supply chain, students can enjoy a full breakfast for under five pounds.”

The pub’s name honors Sir Ronald Wates, whose family originally funded the building, continuing the Wates family’s long-standing connection with the university. The Sir Ronald Wates will serve not only students and staff but also visitors and the local community, complementing Surrey’s existing campus dining options like Hillside Food Court and The Hideout.

The reopening of The Sir Ronald Wates will see previous Wates House bar staff retained and fully trained in Wetherspoons’ operational standards to ensure a seamless transition and quality service from day one.
