Birmingham City Council has announced the installation of the first new average speed cameras on Coventry Road, marking a significant step in the city’s road safety efforts. This initiative expands the existing average speed camera coverage from Berkley Road to Bordesley Middleway along the A45.
The move coincides with recent speed limit reductions on 27 roads across the city, lowering limits from 40mph to 30mph to enhance safety. Prior to activation, all signage required under the Highway Code and national regulations will be fully installed, with temporary signs warning drivers during the installation phase.
Funded by the Clean Air Zone net surplus revenues, these cameras have been strategically placed in locations identified by the council and West Midlands Police based on the frequency and severity of collisions. Their purpose is to encourage consistent compliance with speed limits, thereby reducing the risk and severity of accidents.

Unlike traditional speed cameras that capture speed at a single point, average speed cameras track the speed of vehicles over a distance. This method promotes safer driving behaviors along entire stretches of road.
Councillor Majid Mahmood, cabinet member for environment and transport, emphasized the council’s commitment: “Following our declaration of a road safety emergency, this installation is a first of six new average speed camera locations to improve safety. Dangerous driving poses no justification, and these cameras are essential to deter reckless motorists who endanger lives on Coventry Road. Our message is clear: Slower is safer. Adhering to speed limits saves lives.”
West Midlands Police Chief Constable Craig Guildford voiced strong support, noting: “This initiative has my full backing to help reduce road casualties and save lives on our roads.”
With this deployment, Birmingham is reinforcing its dedication to safer streets by combining enforcement technology with speed reduction efforts.
