Households across England are being urged to prepare for the final brown bin collection before winter breaks the service. In Peterborough, the last brown bin collection is scheduled for 12 December 2025, with the service set to resume on 13 January 2026. Residents are reminded that to continue using the garden waste collection after the break, they must subscribe and pay online or via phone.
The council advises: “If you don’t already have a garden waste bin, we will provide one once you sign up. When registering by phone, please inform the call handler if you require a bin. After subscribing and paying, a collection sticker will be sent to you to affix to your bin. Our crews will have your subscription details on record.”
In Leeds, the brown bin service is temporarily paused over the winter months due to reduced garden waste. The final collections this year took place between 17 and 29 November. All garden waste collected by the councils during the year is composted locally, supporting farming, horticulture, and land restoration projects.

Councillor Mohammed Rafique, Leeds City Council’s executive member for climate, energy, environment, and green space, emphasized the importance of preparing for the service pause: “With winter approaching, our brown bin collections will pause, so it is vital for residents to put out their bins for the final emptying if needed over the coming weeks. For garden waste disposal during the break, residents can use any household waste recycling centre free of charge.”
Composting at home remains the most sustainable option for garden waste management, reducing environmental impact and supporting local ecosystems.
