A Birmingham couple has experienced an extraordinary rise to social media fame thanks to their charming videos showcasing their dinner routines. Dawn Emmett, 58, and Neil Haycock, 52, launched their TikTok account, ‘Everyone Needs a Neil’, in February, and within six months, they have gathered an impressive 23.8 million views.
With a follower count reaching 55,400 on TikTok and nearly 30,000 on their newly launched Facebook page, the pair admits they are still amazed by the rapid success. Speaking to BirminghamLive, Dawn described their experience as “madness,” expressing how unexpected the sudden popularity has been. “I just put that first video up and you don’t expect things to blow up like that. It seems there’s a real appetite for this kind of local content.”
Their videos feature typical evening meals where Neil often presents appealing plates, including classic roasts, peri peri chicken, seabass, and more. This straightforward and relatable approach has resonated with many, resulting in a loyal following enamoured by their authenticity. Comments frequently inquire, “Where can I find a Neil?” and “What’s for dinner, Neil?!”
Dawn elaborated on the appeal, explaining that people appreciate the role reversal where Neil takes care of the cooking. “He’s looking after me. I do some cooking occasionally, but not much, and people keep saying ‘bring back Neil!’ Many have commented on how wonderfully Neil treats me, with some even jokingly proposing or asking him to cook for them. We find these comments hilarious.”
The couple make a point of engaging with their audience by responding to comments, which Dawn credits as a key factor in their rapid rise. “I always reply to the comments because people take the time to leave such lovely messages. It helps build the community.”
Having met eight years ago and moved in together two years later, Neil proposed to Dawn during a trip to Egypt last year. They are planning their wedding for next October.
The inspiration behind their channel’s name stems from family sayings about the need for a Neil in everyone’s life. Dawn recalls one evening when she spontaneously decided to film Neil in the kitchen, thinking it might be a hit. Since then, their content has garnered 1.1 million likes and nearly 500,000 individual likes across their posts.
Recognised frequently around Birmingham, whether dining out or shopping, the couple embrace their new profile. Dawn emphasises the appeal of TikTok’s authenticity, noting that it attracts not only young people but all ages seeking genuine content.
Both Dawn and Neil hope their story encourages others, regardless of age or technical know-how, to pursue new ventures and connect meaningfully online. Dawn advises, “The internet can be a negative place, which is sad, but don’t let that stop you from sharing fun content. We’ve found it really enjoyable and uplifting. Just ignore negativity, have fun, and be yourself.”
