Family who traded UK for Thailand live off just £40 a day

Feeling “trapped in the matrix of the 9 to 5,” Amelia Wray, 31, and Billy Evans, 37, made the life-changing decision to leave the UK behind with their three young children—Archie, four; Annie, two; and Albert, one. Seeking a more fulfilling lifestyle and greater family connection, they sold their five-bedroom home in West Yorkshire and relocated to Thailand with a daily budget of just £40.

Their journey began in July 2025 with a seven-week trial trip to Southeast Asia to test the waters of living abroad. Captivated by Thailand’s vibrant culture, family-friendly atmosphere, and affordable cost of living, the couple moved swiftly to sell their home, securing a cash buyer and using the proceeds to fund their adventure.

Before their departure in early November, the family donated belongings to charity, sold items online, and arranged cost-effective storage for sentimental possessions. Since settling in Thailand, their monthly expenses have dropped from £2,500 in the UK to around £1,250, with accommodation costs at just £550 per month.

Amelia, a former self-employed hairdresser, and Billy, previously in telecommunications, now embrace a flexible, nomadic lifestyle. While Amelia retrains as a life coach, Billy is preparing to launch his next online project. Their children attend temporary educational hubs offering activities, complemented by home schooling entirely managed by their parents.

Their initial plan includes exploring Bangkok, venturing north to Chiang Mai, and finally visiting the southern islands, with a flexible approach to future locations across Southeast Asia. Despite mixed reactions from friends and family, the couple is confident in their choice.

“Most people are supportive, though some ask if we’ve really thought it through,” Amelia said. “But we wanted to show our kids there’s more than one path in life, and we can live more fully and affordably.”

Living amid Thailand’s dynamic energy, the family finds the environment welcoming and enriching for their children. Looking ahead, they plan to celebrate Christmas and New Year in Hua Hin, embracing the joys of their unplanned journey, one day at a time.
