The family of Ayuub Hassan Abdi, a 34-year-old described as a “kind-hearted family man,” paid an emotional tribute as the inquest into his death opened at Birmingham Coroner’s Court.
On the early morning of September 6, 2023, Ayuub fell from a third-floor window at his home in Handsworth, sustaining fatal head injuries. Police had been called to the property following reports that he had attacked two housemates while wielding a knife.
During officers' attempt to intervene, Ayuub moved toward an open window, and a Taser was discharged. Although the independent investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) found no grounds for further action against the officers involved, the circumstances surrounding his death remain under examination.

Ayuub’s mother gave a powerful account of her son’s challenging journey. She recounted fleeing famine and civil war in their home country and later bringing Ayuub to the UK at age 16, hoping to provide him with safety and a fresh start. “I never imagined my son’s life would be cut short in the one place I thought he would be safe,” she said.
His sister, Sabrina Ali, described the deep void left by Ayuub’s passing. She reflected on his kindness, warmth, and efforts to support their mother through cooking and cleaning—a heartfelt attempt to make up for lost years apart during his difficult childhood marked by separation and abuse in their home country.
Sabrina said, “He was a natural source of laughter and generosity, always putting others before himself. Losing him has left a profound impact on our family, especially my mother, who misses her only son deeply.”
The ten-day inquest seeks to uncover the full circumstances surrounding Ayuub’s death, giving voice to a family grieving the loss of a beloved man whose life was tragically cut short.
