The family of a man fatally struck in a hit-and-run collision on Birmingham’s Soho Road is grappling with an “unbearable reality,” according to the West Midlands Mayor, Richard Parker.
The victim, believed to be in his 50s, died in hospital after being hit by a Vauxhall Corsa near the junction of Soho Road and Thornhill Road shortly before 11:20 am on December 16. Another pedestrian, a woman in her 40s, was also struck and remains hospitalized with leg injuries.
Mayor Parker expressed deep sympathy for those affected by what he called a “senseless tragedy on our roads.” “A family is facing the unbearable reality that someone they love is gone. Their lives have been changed forever in an instant,” he said. “Our thoughts are also with the second victim fighting to recover in hospital.”

Describing the incident as a devastating blow to the Handsworth community, Parker added, “Too many families here have already suffered loss on the streets they call home. No community should have to carry this weight. We stand with them in grief and solidarity.”
He also extended gratitude to emergency responders, praising their professionalism and care under difficult circumstances. “We owe them our deepest thanks,” he said.
West Midlands Police have launched a major manhunt for the driver, whose vehicle has been recovered near the scene. The driver fled immediately after hitting the pedestrians, and investigations are ongoing.
Police urged anyone who witnessed the accident or has dash cam or mobile footage to come forward. The road remains closed as authorities continue their inquiries.
