‘Extraordinary’ mum dies following suspected hit-and-run; three men arrested

A tragic loss has touched the community after Claire Laybourne, a 39-year-old mother, died following a suspected hit-and-run on the A19 in Holystone, North Tyneside.

The incident, which occurred late on Friday, December 5, left Claire with serious injuries after a collision involving two vehicles: a Volkswagen T-roc and a Skoda Fabia. Medics rushed to the scene and transported her to hospital, but she sadly passed away the next day.

Claire’s family has shared a heartfelt tribute to her memory, describing her as “a beautiful soul” whose kindness and warmth enriched the lives of everyone who knew her. They remembered her as an extraordinary mother, a devoted partner, a beloved daughter, and a loyal friend whose presence brightened every room.

Northumbria Police are treating the case as a suspected hit-and-run, noting that the driver of the Skoda failed to stop and is believed to have fled on foot. Three men, aged in their 20s and 30s, have since been arrested in connection with the incident and released on bail pending further investigation.

Officers are particularly eager to hear from anyone who may have seen a black Skoda Fabia with a 24-plate registration in the area around the time of the collision. Sgt Dave Roberts expressed his sympathies to Claire’s family and urged anyone with information, no matter how minor it may seem, to come forward and assist the inquiry.

Claire’s family concluded: “Her memory will forever live on in all of us who were blessed to know her. May she rest in peace, and may we hold her spirit close as we navigate the world without her.”
