Ex-Aston Villa Midfielder Tim Iroegbunam Set for £20m Premier League Transfer to Hull City

Hull City are reportedly closing in on a high-profile £20 million signing of former Aston Villa midfielder Tim Iroegbunam from Everton. The 22-year-old is expected to bring much-needed strength and Premier League experience to the Tigers as they prepare for their season opener against Manchester United on August 22.

Iroegbunam’s journey has been marked by steady progression through English football ranks. Initially signed by Aston Villa from West Bromwich Albion’s academy, he made 12 Premier League appearances for Villa over three seasons. However, to comply with profit and sustainability regulations, Villa sold him to Everton in a deal reportedly worth £9 million that also sent Lewis Dobbin in the opposite direction.

Reflecting on his time at Villa, Iroegbunam told the Liverpool Echo: “I didn’t really get much of a chance or show my true self at Villa. Obviously there’s frustration about not getting more chances, but football is tough and you just have to take your opportunities when they come. Perhaps I didn’t fully seize mine, but I knew if I did well in pre-season there’d be an opportunity.”

Since joining Everton two years ago, the Birmingham-born midfielder has built solid experience with 47 Premier League appearances across two seasons. Despite having one year left on his contract at Goodison Park, it is believed there was no sell-on clause in his transfer from Villa.

Hull City view Iroegbunam as a vital addition to reinforce their squad as they gear up for life back in the top flight. His pedigree includes winning the European Under-19 Championship with England and exposure at various competitive levels, including the Premier League and Conference League.

While Hull are leading the chase, other clubs such as newly-promoted Ipswich Town have also shown interest in the versatile midfielder. For now, however, Hull City appear ready to secure a marquee signing that could play a pivotal role in their Premier League survival bid.
