Stephen Warnock, former Aston Villa and England defender, played an unexpected role as a vigilante to help bring a man to justice who was terrorizing women in his fiancee’s family. The incident unfolded in Mossley Hill, Liverpool, where Andrew Mulhearn, 30, repeatedly harassed women by staring through their front window and lingering at their door late at night.
Motivated by the safety of his loved ones and his own two daughters, Warnock decided to stake out the address. “It’s unfair to allow people to walk around with that kind of power,” he said. “To have young girls petrified to walk out of their own home or even be in their own home is wrong.”
Warnock and his fiancee monitored the house one evening, waiting for the culprit to arrive. After waiting over an hour and enduring minor setbacks like setting off their car alarm, they spotted Mulhearn approaching the house around 11 p.m. Warnock followed him on foot but eventually lost sight. His fiancee then called 999, and the police arrived shortly after.

Mulhearn was identified and arrested that night. At Liverpool Magistrates’ Court, he pleaded guilty to two counts of harassment without violence, incurred a 12-week suspended prison sentence, 25 rehabilitation days, 200 hours of unpaid work, and a five-year restraining order.
Warnock reflected on the experience, explaining why he chose to get involved: “Sometimes you hear of harassment cases, but you don’t truly understand the impact until you speak to those affected. It felt predatory. You’re putting the onus on the victim to avoid danger even in their own home, which should be their safest place.”
