Every Birmingham Road Gaining Average Speed Cameras as Expansion Begins

Drivers in Birmingham will face increased speed monitoring in 2026 as the city council expands the network of average speed cameras across six new routes. This expansion is part of an ongoing effort to improve road safety and reduce accidents caused by speeding.

Currently, average speed cameras operate on six key road sections within Birmingham. The upcoming additions will nearly double this coverage, focusing on some of the city’s busiest and most accident-prone roads. One of the first routes to see extended enforcement will be the A45 Coventry Road.

Alongside the camera expansion, several major roads in Birmingham have recently had their speed limits reduced to 30 mph. These changes put additional emphasis on drivers to pay close attention to speed limits and avoid fines.

Cllr Majid Mahmood, cabinet member for environment and transport, emphasized the council’s commitment to road safety: “When we declared a road safety emergency, we promised to take action, and this is exactly what is happening. Installing new average speed cameras will help make our roads safer by deterring dangerous driving. Too many lives have been lost due to reckless speeding, especially on the Coventry Road. Our message is clear: Slower is Safer. Stick to speed limits and save lives.”

West Midlands Police Chief Constable Craig Guildford also voiced support for the initiative, stating, “I fully support this measure, which will hopefully reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.”

With the expansion of average speed cameras and lowered speed limits, Birmingham aims to create safer driving environments and encourage responsible behavior on its streets.
