Eric Dane Passes Away at 53 After Courageous ALS Battle

Eric Dane, beloved for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has passed away at the age of 53 following a brief battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He died on Thursday afternoon, surrounded by close friends, his devoted wife, and his two daughters, Billie and Georgia.

Diagnosed last year, Dane became a passionate advocate for ALS awareness and research, determined to help others facing the same devastating condition. Despite his declining health, he continued to work, notably appearing in the critically acclaimed HBO series Euphoria, although he was too unwell to attend the Emmy Awards last month.

Born in San Francisco in 1972, Dane’s entrance into acting came unexpectedly after starring in a school production of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons. He landed a small role on Saved by the Bell in 1991, which ignited a prolific career spanning over three decades. He is best remembered for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan—affectionately nicknamed “McSteamy”—on Grey’s Anatomy from 2006 to 2012, returning for a guest appearance in 2021. Earlier, he appeared in nine episodes of the fantasy drama Charmed.

A statement from his family expressed deep sorrow: “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, who were the center of his world. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support. We ask for privacy as we navigate this impossible time.”

In interviews since his diagnosis, Eric remained resolute, famously saying, “I wake up every day and I’m immediately reminded that this is happening… I don’t think this is the end of my story.” His bravery and advocacy left a lasting impact on the ALS community and his fans worldwide. Eric Dane’s legacy of talent, resilience, and kindness will be lovingly remembered.
