England Braces for Heavy Snowfall with 1mm per Hour on Christmas Day

As Christmas Day approaches, weather forecasts signal a wintry blast sweeping across England, with heavy snowfall expected in several towns and cities. WX Charts, utilizing data from Met Desk, shows weather maps turning white and blue, indicating snow accumulations set to impact the region on December 25.

Snowfall could reach as far east as East London during the early hours of Christmas, with temperatures plunging below freezing across much of the country. The color-coded maps reveal England coated in shades of white, grey, purple, and blue—signifying varying levels of snow accumulation.

Regions most affected include Greater London, Essex, and Suffolk, where snowfall rates are predicted at up to 1mm per hour—the largest amount of snow expected during this storm. Areas in the southwest such as Cornwall and Devon may also receive a light dusting. Meanwhile, London is expected to endure chilly temperatures, with lows hovering around 0 to 1°C.

Looking ahead to the New Year, the Met Office advises that high pressure is likely to remain near the UK, though its precise position is uncertain. This could bring predominantly settled and dry conditions, accompanied by overnight frost and fog. However, colder air masses may increase the risk of wintry hazards compared to recent weeks.

Mid-January may see more changeable weather patterns returning, though forecast confidence for this period remains low.

In the shorter term, the BBC Weather team predicts Friday to be brighter, despite scattered sharp showers, especially across northern and western regions and higher elevations in western Scotland where wintry precipitation is likely. The best sunshine will shine over eastern and southern parts of the UK.

The weekend outlook hints at intermittent rain and a mix of sun and showers, with generally milder conditions than average aside from occasional chilly mornings.
