Ellie Simmonds Reflects on Retirement Joy Ahead of Birmingham 2022 Games

Ellie Simmonds, one of Great Britain’s most celebrated para swimmers, has reflected fondly on her retirement before the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming Glasgow 2026 event.

At just 31 years old, Simmonds has an extraordinary career behind her, securing five Paralympic gold medals starting at age 13 in Beijing. She retired from competitive swimming in 2021, a decision she stands by wholeheartedly.

In 2022, rather than competing, Simmonds contributed to Birmingham Games’ success behind the scenes as a member of the organizing committee and worked alongside the BBC’s coverage team. Sharing a relaxed moment on the broadcast sofa with Clare Balding, Rebecca Adlington, and Mark Foster, she felt reassured about stepping away from the pool.

Simmonds said, “I loved Birmingham, seeing it from a different perspective. Being part of the Games without the pressure to perform was wonderful. Watching swimming without diving into cold water or handling competition stress made it truly enjoyable.”

She continued, “Being a spectator means no chlorine smell, dry hair, and more comfort. Of course, I miss being fit, but I treasure letting current athletes take on that commitment. Swimming demands so much time and dedication—early mornings and total immersion in the sport—so it’s nice to experience it differently now.”

Although she no longer competes, Ellie remains a passionate sports enthusiast. Recently, she participated in the King’s Baton Relay in Loughborough, an event supported by Team England’s official automotive partner, Geely. This relay involves 74 batons uniquely crafted to represent each Commonwealth nation’s culture. All batons will be united at the Glasgow 2026 opening ceremony, where the Scotland baton will be presented to His Majesty as a symbolic start to the Games.

Simmonds highlighted the unique spirit of the Commonwealth Games, particularly the integration of para and non-disabled athletes competing side by side, fostering a deeper sense of unity. “It’s incredible to celebrate athletes with and without disabilities together. Unlike the Olympics and Paralympics, where interaction happens post-Games, here Olympians and Paralympians join forces as one team. This camaraderie brings a special energy,” she explained.

As Team England gears up for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Ellie Simmonds’ journey from champion swimmer to celebrated ambassador embodies the enduring spirit of sport and teamwork.
