Electric vehicles (EVs) are proving to be more cost-effective than petrol cars, even for drivers relying on public charging stations. New research highlights that drivers could pay as little as £694 annually to charge their electric cars at public chargers, compared to approximately £760 spent filling a petrol vehicle over the same period.
This reduction comes thanks to a new subscription tariff launched by Be.EV, supported by Octopus Energy. The subscription lowers the annual cost of public charging—at any time of day—to just £694, making EV ownership more accessible and economical.
For those who don’t want a subscription, Be.EV still offers an off-peak ultra-rapid charging rate of 39p per kWh. Asif Ghafoor, CEO of Be.EV, emphasized the significance of this development: “Historically, the cost benefits of owning an EV were mainly available to households with driveways. With our new tariff, we’re welcoming 3.7 million more households into the EV revolution.”

Ghafoor explains that the divide between ‘have-driveways and have-nots’ has long hindered EV adoption. “Now, this gap is closing thanks to our market-leading subscription model,” he said. “Our new rate marks a turning point, where it finally makes financial sense for many more people to choose electric over fossil fuel vehicles.”
The tariff is particularly advantageous for EV owners without driveways who often depend on unreliable lamppost chargers with unclear pricing. The £9.99 monthly subscription unlocks unlimited access to Be.EV’s entire charging network, anytime and on any charger type. This cost is quickly offset by the savings on charging fees.
Ghafoor suggests that government action, such as removing VAT on public charging, could further reduce costs and accelerate EV uptake, helping to meet the 2030 emissions targets.
For those hesitant to subscribe, Be.EV also offers a pay-as-you-go ultra-rapid charging option at 39p per kWh after 7pm through their app. This makes affordable EV charging accessible to all drivers, ensuring the future of electric mobility is within reach.
