The episode fast-forwards exactly one year from the present timeline, catching viewers up with Max on his wedding day. Multiple storylines unfold simultaneously, with Max at the center of the unfolding drama. Wood reflects on the contrast between the present and the future, noting, “We see a man who’s maybe at the lowest we’ve ever seen him, and then we flash forward and things are maybe not quite as bad.”
In the lead-up to New Year’s Eve, Max struggles—and often fails—to reconnect with his children, marking what Wood calls an “all-time low” for the character. Executive producer Ben Wadey offers insight into Max’s complex love life, saying, “For Max, life is like one big game of Kiss, Marry, Kill,” teasing the chaos that drives the episode.
