East Midlands Airport Evacuated Over Suspicious Luggage Alert

East Midlands Airport was temporarily evacuated on the morning of Tuesday, May 26, after a security alert was raised regarding a piece of checked-in luggage.

At around 9:30 AM, passengers were instructed to leave the terminal as a precautionary measure. One passenger shared on social media their frustration of being moved onto the runway on one of the hottest days of the year without access to shade, water, or clear updates from airport staff.

The incident also caused disruptions to air traffic, with several planes reported to be circling the airport until the situation was resolved.

An official statement from East Midlands Airport confirmed that the evacuation was purely precautionary. Following thorough investigations, no risk was identified, and normal operations have since resumed. Passengers were allowed back into the terminal after safety checks were completed.

The airport spokesperson said: “We evacuated our terminal today after our security screening equipment raised a concern with a checked-in item of luggage. Investigations have now concluded that there is no risk, and we are resuming normal operations with passengers re-entering the terminal. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, but the safety of our customers and staff is our highest priority.”
