DWP Urges 910,000 Pensioners to Claim Up to £2,600 in Unclaimed Benefits

Over 900,000 state pensioner households across the UK are missing out on an average of £2,600 a year from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) due to unclaimed Pension Credit. Latest data reveal that up to £2.5 billion in Pension Credit benefits went unclaimed in the financial year ending 2024.

Pension Credit is a crucial lifeline designed to boost income for those over the state pension age who are on low earnings. It also helps cover housing costs such as ground rent and service charges. The benefit tops up weekly income to a minimum of £238 for a single claimant or £363.25 for a couple.

Eligibility considers total income, including that of a partner if applicable. Even if your income is above these thresholds, you might still qualify due to factors like disability, caring responsibilities, savings, or housing expenses.

Financial expert Martin Lewis recommends that single pensioners earning under £255 per week and couples earning under £380 should apply. Money Saving Expert highlights that checking eligibility only takes minutes and encourages pensioners not to delay.

The simplest rule of thumb states that if your total weekly income is under £238 (or £363 for couples), you are likely eligible. Those with a weekly income under £250 (or £380 for couples) may also qualify depending on personal circumstances, especially if you receive disability benefits or care for someone.

Claiming Pension Credit also opens access to valuable additional benefits, including free TV licences, council tax reductions worth potentially thousands annually, and the Warm Home Discount, which offers £150 a year. However, these extras are not automatic—you must claim Pension Credit to receive them.

Applications can be made by phone or through a paper form if needed. Friends or family members can request a paper application on behalf of pensioners. You can start applying up to four months before reaching state pension age, but claims can only be backdated by three months.

Given the significant financial support available, it is crucial that eligible pensioners take the time to apply and avoid missing out on these important benefits.
