DWP to Make Double State Pension Payments for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday Recipients in July

In an unusual payment schedule this July, state pensioners who normally receive their payments on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday will benefit from double payments. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is set to issue state pension payments on July 1, 2, and 3 – which fall on those midweek days.

Because the state pension is disbursed every four weeks, many pensioners will also receive a second payment later in the month—on July 29, 30, and 31—resulting in two payments within the same calendar month.

The state pension system operates on a four-weekly cycle, paying recipients 13 times a year. According to Pensions UK, the pension amount is influenced by the number of qualifying National Insurance years an individual has earned. These years include both contributions made while working and credited contributions during times when work was not possible.

Since April 6, 2016, a single-tier State Pension has been in place for those reaching pension age on or after that date. This replaced the previous basic and additional State Pension system for new pensioners, although those who reached State Pension age before this date are still under the old rules.

An annual increase to the State Pension is guaranteed under the “triple lock” system, which ensures pension payments rise each year by the highest of three figures: 2.5%, inflation, or average earnings growth.

For those already over State Pension age, Pension Credit may be available based on income, regardless of National Insurance contributions.

New pensioners will receive notification from the DWP requesting bank or building society details so payments can be deposited directly. Typically, the first pension payment arrives within five weeks after reaching State Pension age.

This rare occurrence of double payments offers midweek pensioners a financial boost this summer.
