The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed the date from which state pensioners can claim their Winter Fuel Payments for this year. Those born on or before 27 June 1960 qualify to receive payments ranging from £100 to £300, depending on age and personal circumstances.
Most eligible pensioners will receive their Winter Fuel Payment automatically starting in November. However, some individuals will need to make a claim if they do not currently receive certain state benefits.
The DWP has clarified that pensioners who receive at least one of twelve specified benefits do not need to take any action to claim the payment. Conversely, if a pensioner does not receive any of these benefits, or has never claimed the Winter Fuel Payment before, or has deferred their State Pension since their last payment, they must submit a claim.

From Monday 19 October 2026, pensioners can claim the Winter Fuel Payment by phone by contacting the Winter Fuel Payment Centre on 0900 731 0160. Claims can be made up until 31 March 2027, covering the winter of 2026 to 2027.
Alternatively, claims can be submitted by post. Pensioners may complete an online form and send it to the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.
The DWP has stated that eligible claimants will receive a letter in October or November detailing the amount they will receive. Those who do not receive a letter but believe they are eligible are advised to check whether a claim is necessary.
Payment amounts are based on the claimant’s age and circumstances during the qualifying week from 21 to 27 September 2026. Importantly, receiving a Winter Fuel Payment will not affect entitlement to other benefits.
The deadline for submitting claims for the payment period of winter 2026 to 2027 is 31 March 2027.
