DWP Sets Birth Date Criteria for Winter Fuel Payment Eligibility

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced the birth date cutoff for individuals eligible to receive the Winter Fuel Payment in 2026. The payment will be reinstated by the Labour government to help eligible residents with their heating costs.

Individuals born on or before 27 June 1960 who usually reside in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland qualify to receive the payment. Those living outside these regions are not eligible.

There are specific circumstances that disqualify applicants, including:

  • Being in hospital receiving free treatment for the entire week of 21 to 27 September 2026 and the preceding year.
  • Holding entry permission to the UK that restricts access to public funds.
  • Spending the entire qualifying week in prison.

Residents living in care homes may also qualify, unless both of the following apply:

  • They are recipients of Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).
  • They have resided in the care home continuously since 29 June 2026 or earlier.

Eligible individuals will receive a notification letter in October or November detailing the amount of Winter Fuel Payment they will be granted. Those who do not receive a letter but believe they may be eligible are encouraged to check their status via the DWP website to determine if a claim is necessary.

The payment amount is determined based on the claimant’s birth date and their circumstances during the qualifying week of 21 to 27 September 2026. Importantly, receiving this payment will not impact any other benefits.

The deadline to claim the Winter Fuel Payment for the 2025 to 2026 winter season was 31 March 2026. Claims for the winter period of 2026 to 2027 will open from 21 September 2026 onwards.
