DWP Reveals Full List of 95 Musculoskeletal Conditions Qualifying Pensioners for Up to £114 Weekly

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced a comprehensive list of 95 arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions that qualify state pensioners for Attendance Allowance, an essential benefit providing up to £114.60 a week. This payment offers valuable financial support to pensioners aged 66 and over who require help with daily activities due to long-term health conditions.

Attendance Allowance is designed to assist pensioners who need care or supervision because of physical or mental disabilities. There are two payment rates: a lower rate of £76.70 weekly for those needing help during either the day or night, and a higher rate of £114.60 for those requiring assistance both day and night or who have less than 12 months to live.

To qualify, applicants must have reached the state pension age, which is set to rise from 66 to 67 between 2026 and 2028. Attendance Allowance is not means-tested, so eligibility depends solely on the care needs caused by a qualifying condition, not on income or savings.

Although there is no official exhaustive list, DWP figures highlight 95 musculoskeletal and arthritis conditions commonly linked to successful claims. These range from widespread ailments such as osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia to less common disorders like ankylosing spondylitis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Key qualifying conditions include:

  • Primary generalised osteoarthritis (215,396 recipients)
  • Fibromyalgia (175,219 recipients)
  • Various types of back pain including specific and non-specific (over 160,000 combined)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (84,103 recipients)
  • Osteoarthritis of the knee and hip (approximately 68,000 combined)
  • Lumbar disc lesions and spondylosis
  • Chronic pain syndromes and spinal stenosis

This benefit aims to support those whose musculoskeletal conditions affect their ability to manage everyday tasks. Importantly, even if someone does not identify as disabled, they may still be eligible if their health condition limits their independence and requires help or supervision.

Pensioners experiencing persistent pain, reduced mobility, or other challenges due to arthritis or musculoskeletal diseases are encouraged to consider applying for Attendance Allowance to receive the support they deserve.
