DWP Replaces Three Benefits with £3,500 Bereavement Support Payment Lump Sum

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has consolidated three previous bereavement benefits into a single payment known as the Bereavement Support Payment. This change aims to provide clearer support to families grieving the loss of a partner.

Previously, individuals could receive Widowed Parent’s Allowance, Bereavement Allowance (also known as Widow’s Pension), or Bereavement Payment. Now, these have all been replaced by the Bereavement Support Payment, which offers either a one-off lump sum of £3,500 or 18 monthly payments of £350, depending on individual circumstances.

Eligibility for this payment requires that the claimant was under the State Pension age at the time of their partner’s death, was living in the UK or a qualifying country, and was either married to, in a civil partnership with, or cohabiting as if married to the deceased partner.

Additionally, the deceased must have met specific National Insurance contribution criteria, having paid a certain amount of Class 1 or Class 2 contributions in at least one tax year since 6 April 1975, or the death must have resulted from a workplace accident or occupational disease.

The Bereavement Support Payment is not means-tested, which means the claimant’s income and savings do not affect eligibility or payment amounts. Those unsure about their partner’s National Insurance contributions can still apply, as the Bereavement Service will verify eligibility.

Claims must typically be made within 21 months of the partner’s death to qualify, and to receive the full payment, claims should ideally be submitted within three months. Exceptions may apply if the cause of death was only recently confirmed. It is important to note that individuals currently in prison are not eligible for this payment.

This streamlined payment system aims to provide timely and effective financial support to those coping with bereavement.
