The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a new update regarding the Timms Review, urging Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claimants to participate in an upcoming reforms workshop. Led by Labour Party cabinet member Sir Stephen Timms, the Review aims to assess whether PIP remains fit for purpose in today’s context.
The Timms Review is co-chaired by Sir Stephen Timms, Minister for Social Security and Disability, alongside Sharron Brennan and Dr. Clenton Farquharson CBE. Together, they oversee a steering group responsible for guiding the Review’s direction and outcomes.
To facilitate public involvement, the DWP has released a ‘Workshop in a Box’ toolkit. This resource enables individuals and organizations to host sessions that collect real-life insights on how PIP impacts claimants' daily lives. The feedback gathered through these workshops will play a vital role in shaping the Review’s recommendations, which the steering group will consider before submitting their final proposals to the Secretary of State.

The DWP emphasizes that the ‘Workshop in a Box’ is part of a broad engagement strategy, drawing from diverse evidence to inform potential reforms. Additional facilitator guidance and accessible versions of the ‘about you’ form are expected to be made available shortly.
Amid these developments, reports suggest a major overhaul of the PIP assessment process is likely. Sir Stephen Timms has acknowledged a “strong case” for designing a new type of assessment better suited to claimants' needs.
The Review’s interim report is anticipated soon, with final recommendations slated for release in autumn. In a recent interview, Timms remarked, “We’re looking at how the assessment works, and I think there’s a strong case for a different kind of assessment than the one currently in place.” He further highlighted potential improvements to help people either enter or remain in employment, especially if they encounter health challenges during their working lives.
The ongoing Review seeks to ensure PIP effectively supports claimants within a system that adapts to their evolving circumstances, with conclusions expected this November.
