Two individuals have been arrested as part of an extensive Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) investigation into an alleged £200,000 benefit fraud involving false claims for Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payments (PIP). The arrests followed coordinated raids on homes in London, targeting suspected organised benefit fraud.
A DWP spokesperson emphasised the impact of such fraud, stating: “Benefit fraud steals from taxpayers and takes money away from the people who genuinely need support.”
The spokesperson added: “These arrests demonstrate our determination to work closely with law enforcement partners to identify, investigate and stop those who seek to exploit the welfare system. With the new powers we’ve secured, fraudsters should know our net is getting wider and we will catch them.”

The two suspects were interviewed under caution. They are accused of establishing fictitious companies to launder money and conceal income and assets while submitting false benefit claims. During the operation, officers from the Metropolitan Police recovered a range of high-value and luxury items, including designer bags.
This crackdown aligns with the Government’s commitment to achieve savings of £14.6 billion over the next five years through tackling fraud, error, and debt within the welfare system.
Work and Pensions Minister for Transformation, Andrew Western, previously commented on the new measures: “Hardworking taxpayers deserve a system that pursues those who deliberately dodge their debts, and that is exactly what these new powers deliver. To anyone with an outstanding debt - our door is open and DWP will always work with you to find an affordable way to repay. But for those who can pay and won’t - we’re going further than ever before to claw back cash and crack down on fraud.”
Cabinet Office Minister Satvir Kaur added: “Fraud against the public sector and unrecovered debt deny our vital frontline services of the funding they deserve. Under these new powers in the PAFER Act, this Government will deliver on its promise to protect hardworking taxpayers and clamp down on those who try to cheat the system.”
