DWP Issues Warning Over Universal Credit Reporting Errors That Could Lead to Court

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a stern warning to Universal Credit claimants about the importance of accurately reporting any changes in their circumstances. Failure to do so can lead to benefits being stopped, repayment demands, penalty fines, or even court appearances.

Claimants are often unaware that nearly 20 different types of changes must be reported to the DWP to ensure proper entitlement and payment amounts. These include updating a new mobile number or email address, switching bank accounts, moving to a new address, or changes in rent amounts.

According to DWP guidance on GOV.UK, it’s crucial to report these changes “as soon as they happen.” Delays can cause claimants to receive overpayments, which they will be required to repay. Additionally, changes affect payments for the entire assessment period, not just from the date the change is reported.

The DWP cautions: “You could be taken to court or have to pay a penalty if you give wrong information or do not report a change in your circumstances.”

To report any changes, claimants are advised to sign in to their online Universal Credit account promptly. Staying informed and proactive can help avoid financial and legal complications.
