DWP Introduces Two New Cost of Living Payments to Support UK Households

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has unveiled two new Cost of Living payments starting April 2026, aimed at providing crucial financial aid to UK households. This initiative introduces the Crisis and Resilience Fund, which will replace the Household Support Fund that ended in March 2026.

Designed to assist low-income families experiencing sudden financial difficulties, the fund will be available through local councils and authorities. It is set to operate from April 2026 until March 31, 2029, offering timely support to those facing financial shocks and fostering long-term community and individual financial resilience.

The fund consists of two primary payments: the Housing Payment and the Crisis Payment. The Housing Payment, launching in April 2026, will take over from the existing Discretionary Housing Payments (DHPs), specifically helping households struggling with housing costs.

The Crisis Payment component is aimed at those encountering unexpected expenses or income loss. It will operate primarily on an application basis, providing cash-first assistance to prevent financial shocks from escalating into full crises. Local councils will administer this payment, ensuring prompt intervention to help individuals maintain control over their finances during difficult times.

Financial shocks refer to sudden, unforeseen costs or income reductions that can strain a household’s budget and wellbeing. The DWP emphasizes that timely support not only alleviates immediate pressure but also prevents deeper financial crises.

Overall, the fund supports households in affording 12 critical needs: the Crisis Payment covers nine essential areas, while the Housing Payment targets three specific housing-related expenses. Together, these initiatives aim to provide a comprehensive safety net for vulnerable households while promoting financial stability within communities.
