The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced an increase in the Winter Fuel Payment for state pensioners living alone, raising the amount by £100 for the upcoming winter season of 2026–2027. This boost aims to help pensioners manage their heating bills more comfortably during the colder months.
If you were born before 28 June 1960, you could be eligible to receive between £100 and £300 to offset your winter heating costs. The DWP will send out letters in October or November detailing exactly how much you will receive if you qualify. If you believe you are eligible but do not receive a letter, you can verify whether you need to make a claim.
The payment amount depends on your date of birth and your household circumstances during the “qualifying week,” which runs from 21 to 27 September 2026. Importantly, receiving the Winter Fuel Payment will not affect your entitlement to other benefits.

For individuals living alone, the payments are as follows:
- £200 for those born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960
- £300 for those born before 28 September 1946
Note that claims for the winter period of 2025–2026 closed on 31 March 2026. Claims for winter 2026–2027 will open on 21 September 2026.
For households with two eligible pensioners, the payment is shared based on age:
- Both 80 or over: £150 each (£300 total)
- One 80 or over, one under 80: Older person receives £200; younger gets £100 (£300 total)
- Both under 80: £100 each (£200 total)
- If only one person is eligible in the household: £200 if under 80 or £300 if 80 or over
This adjustment reinforces the government’s commitment to supporting pensioners with essential heating costs during the winter.
