The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed the return of Winter Fuel Payments for the 2026 season. However, pensioners with annual incomes exceeding £35,000 must act carefully: if they do not opt out, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will reclaim the £200 or £300 payments.
To manage Winter Fuel Payment eligibility or report changes in circumstances—such as moving house or updating personal details—pensioners should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre promptly.
Those wishing to opt out must do so before 11:59 pm on 20 September 2026 by completing the online form, or by calling the helpline before 6 pm on 18 September 2026. When opting out, you’ll need your National Insurance number ready.

According to government guidance, pensioners with total income above £35,000 who don’t opt out won’t be able to return the payment voluntarily; HMRC will recoup it directly. It’s also important to note that opting out once means you won’t receive future payments unless you opt in again.
If you decide to opt back in, you need to contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre by 31 March 2027 to receive payments for winter 2026-2027. When contacting the centre, be prepared to provide your name, address, date of birth, and National Insurance number.
Payments may need to be repaid if you fail to report changes promptly, provide incorrect information, or receive an overpayment by mistake. Information on how to repay overpaid benefits is available on the government’s official website.
