DWP Confirms Extended £750 Warm Home Discount for Benefit Recipients Under Andy Burnham

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has officially confirmed that the £150 Warm Home Discount will be reinstated for the 2026/27 winter season and continue annually for the next four years, resulting in a total support package of £750 over that period.

This extension comes under the leadership of Andy Burnham, who is now the Labour Party Prime Minister. The discount will be automatically applied to eligible households, providing crucial financial relief during the colder months.

Ed Miliband, speaking during the announcement of the Warm Home Discount’s extension, emphasised the government’s commitment to addressing the cost of living crisis. He stated: “Tackling the affordability crisis is the government’s number one priority. That is why we are today confirming to millions of eligible families across the country that they will receive the £150 Warm Home Discount every winter for the rest of the decade.”

He added, “This will give families much-needed peace of mind, ensuring they continue to receive vital support during the cold winter months as we work towards reducing energy bills in the long term.”

In England and Wales, households receiving four specific benefits administered by the DWP-Housing Benefit, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Pension Credit, and Universal Credit-will automatically be eligible for the discount.

Ned Hammond, Deputy Director of Policy (Customers) at Energy UK, responded positively to the news: “It’s very good news to see confirmation that the Warm Home Discount will be in place until the end of the decade. The recent expansion means millions of customers will continue to receive vital assistance with their energy bills.”

He also welcomed the policy changes in Scotland, where more customers will receive the discount automatically without needing to apply. Hammond expressed eagerness to collaborate with the government on future refinements to the scheme, such as improved targeting and tiered support, to better aid those most in need and make a meaningful difference to customers struggling with energy costs.

Matt Copeland, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at National Energy Action, also praised the extension: “The five-year continuation of the Warm Home Discount is welcome news for low-income households and offers support that extends beyond the current parliament. Alongside energy advice and efforts to maximise incomes, directly reducing energy bills is a vital lifeline for vulnerable individuals unable to keep their homes adequately warm.”

This extension is seen as a significant step in supporting vulnerable households through ongoing energy affordability challenges throughout the decade.
