DWP brings forward payments for Universal Credit, PIP and DLA claimants amid August bank holiday

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that state pension and benefit payments due at the end of August will be brought forward to Friday 28 August. This adjustment accounts for the August bank holiday and ensures recipients receive their payments on time.

The early payments affect various benefits, including Universal Credit, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), and Disability Living Allowance (DLA). This measure aims to give millions of claimants the financial breathing space they need ahead of the bank holiday weekend.

According to the Labour Party government, this scheduling change will provide households with financial certainty as they prepare for the new school term. It will allow parents and carers to plan their spending with greater confidence, particularly in light of the ongoing high cost of living.

In addition to advancing payments, the government has highlighted several initiatives designed to ease financial pressures. These include capping bus fares at £2, reducing tax on household energy bills, and introducing new regulations to simplify the cancellation of subscription services.

Labour has also emphasised its commitment to supporting families through measures such as offering free school meals to every child from a household claiming Universal Credit. Supported by over £1 billion in funding, this initiative is expected to help lift 100,000 children out of poverty.

Further plans include expanding childcare options, rolling out free breakfast clubs nationwide, and providing parents with up to 95 hours of additional support annually, potentially saving them £450. The government also intends to raise the national living wage, which will increase earnings by approximately £900 per year for a full-time worker starting next year.

The landmark Child Poverty Strategy aims to lift 550,000 children out of poverty by 2030 through measures such as free school meals and expanded childcare provision.

Meanwhile, the DWP continues to operate a £1 billion Crisis and Resilience Fund. This fund serves as a safety net to prevent families from falling into hardship by giving local authorities the resources and flexibility needed to provide community-based support.
