The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced an increase of £100 in the Winter Fuel Payment for older state pensioners ahead of the 2026-27 winter season. This move, introduced by the Labour Party government in collaboration with the DWP, aims to provide extra financial support to help older individuals manage rising energy costs during the colder months.
Eligible pensioners living alone—or those whose cohabitants do not qualify—will receive £200 if born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960. Those born before 28 September 1946 will receive £300. Recipients can expect to receive a notification letter detailing their Winter Fuel Payment amount in October or November. If you believe you qualify but do not receive a letter, it’s important to check whether a claim needs to be submitted.
Payments are calculated based on your circumstances during the ‘qualifying week’ from 21 to 27 September 2026. Importantly, this payment will not impact any other benefits you may be receiving.

Amy Dodge, Head of Influencing at Independent Age, welcomed the announcement, emphasizing its significance: “Linking entitlement to Pension Credit was misguided and excluded many low-income older people. We have been urging the government to expand eligibility to support those facing financial hardship. While this increase offers much-needed relief, clear eligibility details must be communicated promptly to avoid uncertainty.”
Dodge highlighted the urgency for transparency and swift government action, especially during a period of rising living costs. “Older people need reassurance they can afford to heat their homes this winter and beyond. The government must act now to prevent a repeat of last winter, when millions were left in the cold.”
