DWP Announces Early Payment of 11 Key Benefits Ahead of August Bank Holiday

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that millions of claimants will receive their benefit payments earlier than usual in August, with payments scheduled to arrive before the August bank holiday weekend.

Under the current plan, benefits typically paid on Monday 31 August 2026 will instead be disbursed on Friday 28 August 2026. This change applies across the entire United Kingdom, including Scotland, which aligns its payment schedule despite differing bank holiday dates.

The Labour Party government emphasises that bringing benefit payments forward will provide financial certainty for families as they prepare for the new school year. Officials hope that the earlier payments will allow parents and carers to manage their budget with greater confidence during a period marked by high living costs.

Sir Stephen Timms, the Minister for Social Security and Disability, stated: “We’re pleased to confirm that benefit payments due on the August bank holiday will be paid earlier. This will help ensure families and older people receive their money without disruption over the bank holiday period.”

He added: “This Government is determined to ensure people across the country have the support and breathing room they need, which is why we’ve taken action to reduce energy bills, increase the National Minimum Wage, and lift half a million children out of poverty, as well as supporting people into good, secure jobs.”

The early payment affects eleven commonly claimed benefits, including:

  • Universal Credit
  • State Pension
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Pension Credit
  • Employment Support Allowance
  • Industrial Injuries Compensation Scheme

With the overall benefits bill rising significantly, the government remains focused on managing costs effectively. In line with this, Sir Stephen Timms is currently reviewing the Personal Independence Payment scheme with the aim of making it fairer for taxpayers.
