DWP Announces £728 Annual Increase for Deferred State Pension Payments

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed a significant increase in state pension payments for retirees who choose to defer claiming their new State Pension. If you reach State Pension age after 5 April 2016 and decide to delay taking your pension, you can receive an extra 5.8% added to your regular payments for each full year you defer.

This increase means that for every nine weeks you postpone claiming your State Pension, your weekly payment will rise by 1% for the rest of your life. In practical terms, for the tax year 2026/27, this equates to an additional £2.41 per week if you are entitled to the full new State Pension.

Deferring your pension for an entire year boosts your weekly payments by just under 5.8%, which could add approximately £13.94 more each week. Over the course of a year, this amounts to an extra £724.88, raising your weekly State Pension to £255.24.

Financial expert Martin Lewis explains that deferring your State Pension is a strategic choice dependent on your health and longevity. “If you live longer than the average life expectancy, deferring pays off; if not, you might lose out. For those in poor health, deferring may not make sense, but those in good health with a family history of longevity could benefit greatly,” he said.

Lewis also highlights the tax implications, noting that deferring can be advantageous if you currently earn more but expect to pay a lower tax rate later on.

According to Money Saving Expert, although a one-year deferral provides an extra £728 annually for life, it also means forgoing £12,547 in pension payments you could have taken during that first year. This trade-off requires careful consideration based on individual circumstances.
