DWP Accidentally Pays £850 Million in Benefits to Deceased Claimants

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has mistakenly paid out an astonishing £850 million in benefits to around 2.6 million claimants after their deaths. This alarming error has highlighted serious administrative failings within the department’s processing systems.

While the exact types of benefits overpaid remain unclear, the errors reportedly include a combination of mental health support, out-of-work benefits, state pension payments, and others. The overpayments primarily occurred because notifications of claimants’ deaths were either received too late or arrived at the time of payment, preventing the DWP from halting transactions promptly.

Lee Anderson, Reform UK’s Work and Pensions spokesman, condemned the situation as a “scandal” that exposes deep systemic issues. He criticized both major political parties, stating, “Nearly a billion pounds of taxpayers’ money has been paid out to people who are no longer alive, and ministers have known about the problem for years yet failed to fix it. Both Labour and the Conservatives have repeatedly proven they cannot be trusted with public funds.”

Shimeon Lee from the TaxPayers’ Alliance added, “These figures reveal a department that has lost control over basic administration. Channeling nearly a billion pounds to deceased claimants is an outrageous waste of taxpayer money. The government must simplify welfare eligibility and standardize the system to ensure accurate, efficient payments.”

Responding to the issue, a DWP spokesperson emphasized their commitment to recovering overpayments “where it is reasonable and cost-effective.” They urged the public to use the Tell Us Once service, which streamlines reporting deaths to government agencies, helping to promptly update records and prevent wrongful payments.

This incident reflects urgent calls for improved efficiency and rigorous oversight to prevent further financial losses and protect public resources.
