In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), the DVSA highlighted the importance of reviewing a vehicle’s MOT records through their online service. This allows buyers to check recent MOT advisories, identify any recurring problems, and verify the vehicle’s overall condition based on its test performance.
To access this information, you’ll need the 11-digit reference number from the vehicle’s log book (V5C) or the vehicle’s registration number. The online service provides detailed information including past MOT results — whether the vehicle passed or failed — recorded mileage at the time of testing, upcoming MOT due dates, and downloadable copies of current and previous MOT certificates.

Additionally, the record shows where each test was performed and lists any failed parts or minor issues flagged during testing. The DVSA also notes that the MOT history may reveal if the vehicle has been subject to a manufacturer’s safety recall.
This online check extends beyond cars to motorcycles, vans, heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), trailers, buses, and coaches, with varying start dates for test results availability: cars, motorcycles, and vans since 2005; HGVs, trailers, buses, and coaches since 2018; and vehicles tested in Northern Ireland since 2017. For HGV trailers, a trailer identification number is required to search the history.
