DVLA Urges Drivers Not to Panic If Driving Licence Is Lost

The DVLA has issued an important reminder to drivers not to worry if they misplace their driving licence before heading out. In a recent social media post, the agency urged motorists to double-check they have all essential items but reassured them that replacing a lost licence is straightforward and fast.

Replacing a driving licence costs £20 and can be paid using MasterCard, Visa, Electron, or Delta debit or credit cards. This service is available online and accommodates both full and provisional driving licences. To be eligible, you must be a resident of Great Britain and not currently disqualified from driving. (Northern Ireland uses a separate system.)

When applying for a replacement, applicants will be asked to provide all addresses lived at over the past three years, as well as their driving licence number, National Insurance number, and passport number if known.

If your licence is due to expire within two years, you can choose to update your photograph during the replacement process. Drivers have the option to keep their current photo or use their valid UK passport photo, provided the licence expiration is within two years and the DVLA has permission to access the passport image.

If a new photo is needed, the DVLA will provide instructions on how to submit one. There is no requirement to have the old paper counterpart of your licence when applying.

In case of theft, motorists are advised to report the incident to the police before applying for a replacement licence.

After submitting an application, the DVLA will send a confirmation email. Applicants may also receive invitations to participate in research but can opt out if they wish.
